UnitE Investments

UnitE Investments is an investment firm based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Our business model emphasizes seeking investment opportunities where our capital can make a positive impact by supporting organizations engaged in creating meaningful change. We believe in investing in ventures that align with our values and have the potential to contribute to positive social, environmental and economic outcomes. Our aim is to generate both financial returns and societal benefits creating a win-win situation for all stakeholders. We also recognize that meaningful change can take root from the efforts of individuals and organizations that are engaged outside of the business paradigm and so our ‘investments’ include grants, philanthropy and investments with concessionary (below market) returns.

Our Core Mission at Unit E is to drive positive change through strategic impact investments. Our current areas of focus include:

  • Renewable Energy
  • Regenerative Agriculture
  • Sustainable Forestry that protects Biodiversity

Investment Philosophy & Approach

ACHIEVING POSITIVE IMPACT OBJECTIVES

We understand investing is only one means by which to achieve our positive impact objectives, thus we employ a continuum of approaches from lesser to greater impact with the ongoing objective of transitioning to higher levels of impact and with the intention of moving the investments from lower to greater levels of impact.

• Traditional Investing: Managed for financial return with basic ESG considerations.
• Low-to-Mid Impact Investing: Seeking solid financial returns alongside demonstrable, though not necessarily transformative impact.
• High Impact Investing: Prioritizing potentially transformational, often early-stage ventures where impact goals may outweigh immediate financial return expectations.
• Philanthropy: Supporting high-impact initiatives with no expectation of financial return.

For our high-impact investments, we adhere to the following principles:

• Impact Prioritization: We decidedly favor opportunities demonstrating strong, verifiable, and scalable impact.
• Direct Investment Structure: Our primary focus is on direct investments rather than funds.
• Early-Stage Investing: We primarily invest in early-stage ventures (typically Seed to Pre-Series A rounds) where we believe our capital and strategic engagement can be most impactful.
• Rigorous Due Diligence: We conduct detailed due diligence before committing to any investment. This rigorous process encompasses impact potential, technical feasibility, operational capabilities, team assessment, and other critical factors.

Exploratory Interests & Research Unit E is committed to continuous learning and expanding our understanding of how to contribute to the enabling of positive change in the following areas:

• Environmental: We are deeply committed to the natural world which supports us and all other life on earth. In addition to supporting initiatives that work to reverse global heating we are concerned about the global loss of ecosystems and biodiversity. We have an interest in projects and investments that will help bring about more sustainable systems including sustainable food packaging, plant-based meat alternatives, wildfire control and truly sustainable forestry, and the conservation of natural ecosystems.

• Indigenous Reconciliation: We feel Canada has the potential to be a positive model for the world with our culture of embracing diversity and pluralism, but the historic treatment of Canada’s Indigenous People runs strongly against this ideal. For Canada to be a leader on the world stage, we must acknowledge these wrongs and collectively work to remedy past injustices and forge strong and positive relations between Indigenous people and all Canadians. Contributing positively to this journey is a priority both in our investment and philanthropic undertakings.

• AI Safety (Philosophical & Research Interest): We hold a strong philosophical interest in AI safety and ethics, believing that the trajectory of AI, if not carefully guided, could pose substantial societal and environmental risks in the very near, medium and long term. We are dedicated to research, dialogue, and identifying and supporting like-minded organizations and groups working to ensure beneficial, human compatible AI development.

Geographic Considerations:
While our current focus is primarily North America, we have made investments in Africa and Europe and are open to compelling impact ventures globally.
